Notes:
There are also court records at Caldwell Parish showing there was quite a court battle between Rachel Campbell,Henryetta's grandmother and Edwin E.Roberts, maternal grandfather of Henryetta over custody of Henryetta.Rachel was given custody by the local parish judge but this was appealed to district court by Edwin E. Roberts and he gained custody in 1847,however it is beleived that with the help of Rachel's adult sons that Rachel took Henryetta and fled to Jackson Parish. This is the story told by decendants of Henryetta and census records of 1850 shows Henryetta in Rachel's household.
Following is a transcript of documents located in court files at Caldwell parish court house in Colombia Louisiana.

Petitioner alleges that said minor being destitute of parents is in need of some legal protection wherefore he prays that he be appointed tutor of said minor Henrietta Ketura Campbell and for such further order or orders as may be necessary for the promises.

Att'y
Filed 11 March 1845
To the honorable judge of the court of probate in and for the parish of Caldwell and state of Louisiana.
The petition of Rachel Campbell residing in the parish and state aforesaid with respect represents unto your honor that she is the grandmother of Henrietta Ketura Campbell now a minor orphan of the body of her son Wilson A. Campbell and his wife, both lately deceased, that the said wife of the said Wilson A. Campbell died sometime in the summer of 1843 and that after her death Wilson A. Campbell, the father of the above named minor put it in the hands of the petetioner to raise and take care of and that it has remained in her hands ever since. That the now said Wilson A. Campbell is dead, that he died in January 184? and that his last request was that petitioner thereto to keep and raise the said child that not withstanding this one Edwin E. Roberts by law claims to the tutorship of said minor, though he is not in anyway entitled to it for various reasons, first the said minor is an infant girl and the said Roberts has no wife to take charge of and raise her,2nd said Roberts is indebted to the estate of Wilson A. Campbell of which said minor is an heir.3rd said Roberts is in no way by law entitled to the tutorship of said minor, wherefore petitioner prays your honor reject the said Roberts as tutor for said minor and that your honor cause petitioner be appointed administratrixship tutrix for said minor and for general releif.

Att'y
Rachel Campbell
vs
Edwin E.Roberts
Plaintiff in opposition to the appointment of Elvin E. Roberts tutor to the minor daughter of Wilson A. Campbell deceased, the plaintiff in opposition being the grandmother and the defendant Edwin E. Roberts being the grandfather on the mother's side of the minor child of Wilson A. Campbell deceased to wit Henry Etta Catura Campbell.
Evidence left in opposition,Nathan Lee states that he has been acquainted with the defendant Robers in opposition for the last five years, that it is common report that the defendat in opposition is the father of Wilson A. Campbell's wife who was the mother of Henrietta Catura Campbell and that the defendant in opposition Edwin E.Roberts is the only grandfather to said child now living to his knowledge(Says that her witness came to this country in 1839--that Wilson A. Campbell and the mother of Henrietta Catura Campbell were living together in Harrisonburg as man and wife)--In brackets-objected to'record of marriage between Wilson A Campbell and Elizabeth Ann Roberts,a copy to be substituted in place of original marked.
Nathan Lee cross examined by plaintiff in opposition---says that he never knew that Wilson A. Campbell and Elizabeth Ann Roberts were married only from hearsay, says he has heard that Elizabeth Ann Roberts ,the wife of Wilson A.Campbell was the daughter of Edwin E. Roberts and had also heard that she was not his legetimate daughter, that the plaintiff in opposition Rachel Campbell is the mother of Wilson A. Campbell and the widow of John P. Campbell dec'd who was also the father of Wilson A. Campbell dec'd-----to Sarah Roberts, the wife of Edwin E. Roberts objected to on the grounds of not being authentic and irrevelat by the opposite party.
Lorenzo D. Southwell, sworn, stated that he always since living in this parish (two years) understood that the plaintiff in opposition and John P. Campbell dec'd were the father and mother of Wilson A. Campbell dec'd who was the father of Henrietta Catura Campbell----Cross examined---says that he has heard that Edwin E. Roberts was the father of the wife of Wilson A. Campbell.
I certify therefore that it is admitted that Henrietta Catura Campbell daughter of Wilson A. Campbell has been living with her grandmother Rachel Campbell, plaintiff in opposition for some time previos to the death of her father Wilson A. Campbell and since.
Wm.P.Snow
Judge of probate
Tutorship of Henrietta K. Campbell
District Court
Parrish of Caldwell
April Term 1847
In the matter of this application,it is ordered, adjudged and decreed by reason of the law and evidence that the petitioner Edwin E. Roberts be and is hereby appointed tutor to the minor Henrietta K. Campbell and that he have the care and supervision of said minor and it is further decreed that said petitioner give bond and security in the sum of two hundred dollars conditioned according to law for the faithful discharge of the tutorship aforesaid and it is further ordered that the appointment of Rachel Campbell be rescinded at her cost.
Done and signed in open court this 16th day of April 1847.
G.Mayo
Judge of the 11th dist.
Apparently there is some paper work missing in this case showing the probate court gave tutorship to Rachel Campbell and Edwin E. Roberts must have appealed to the district court as Rachel's tutorship was rescinded and Edwin E Roberts was appointed tutor two years later in district court.
We do know that Henry Etta was still in Rachel's custody on the 1850 census.Family word of mouth says Rachel fled to Jackson parish with Henrietta using the help of her adult sons.Henrietta"s names are spelled two ways in the documents.

An account by S. J. Harper Well, what about our public schools of any kind? Well, we had none. There may have been a few private schools before the Civil War, but none of account for many years after. I had never gone to school a day when I was eleven years old. In 1872 Uncle Jack Roberts and my father built a little split log school house some 3 miles north-east of Beech Creek Church and hired one Shelve West to teach a three month school during February, March and April. Uncle Jack Roberts sent five children and paid $ 10 per month and Papa boarded the teacher and paid $ 5 per month and sent four children.

"The surname Sessoms appears to be a variation of Sessions, which in English means 'one who came from Soissons,' a city of France situated about 65 miles northeast of Paris on the left bank of the Aisne River. . . We can further assume that the first Sessoms arrived [in England] during the Norman conquest [1066]. There appears to be no connection between the Sissons and the Sessoms [in Virginia]; but the name as Sessoms and Sessums was the same name, the difference in spelling being the failure to close the o by the clerks keeping records."
