Joel Sullivan was born about 1786 in Greenville, South Carolina, to Moses Sullivan and Millie Chandler. Deliah Johnson was born about 1794 in Newberry, South Carolina, to Daniel Johnson (Johnston), Sr. and Sarah Kirkpatrick.
Joel and Deliah were married about 1810 in Newberry, South Carolina. By 1830 they were living in Blount County, Alabama.
In 1840, they were living in Benton (now Calhoun) County, Alabama, where Joel died on March 31, 1843. In 1850, Deliah was living with two of her children in Marshall County, Alabama. Deliah died after 1854 in Marshall County.
Joel and Deliah were the parents of eight children, of which Elizabeth was the youngest. One of their sons, Eli William Sullivan married Margaret Bailey, daugher of Zachariah and Mary Bailey, who were also the parents of Elizabeth's mother-in-law.
